For the new model Skymate, when the temperature is displayed, press and hold ON/OFF button, then press MODE key to toggle between F or C. Release the ON/OFF and MODE buttons when the desired unit is displayed. Note that our manuals can be found here.
How do I get the most accurate readings?
This instrument is very accurate when aligned with the winds axis. When taking readings - keep the unit held high. For varying wind directions, you should slowly sweep your arm from side to side to allow the unit to sample wind from various directions. Once you see the highest reading, that is usually where the wind is coming from.
Why do the wind readings seem lower than they should be?
This could be because you have the unit in AVG mode. Make sure you are sampling current wind speed. Another reason your unit could be reading low is that you are not taking your readings directly into the wind.
Why don't my readings match the Weather Channel?
Remember that wind speeds vary quite a bit from area to area. Your wind speed in your yard, or on your boat (etc) will not be the same as where the local weather station has their wind detection device set up. You need to also account for trees, houses, obstacles, that will interfere with wind. Temperature and windchill will also vary.
My temperature (& humidity on the SM-19) reads too high, how do I fix it?
Make sure your hands and face are not near the temperature (and humidity on the SM-19) sensors. The heat and moisture from your hands and face will affect the unit's readings. Humidity (relative humidity) is based on air temperature also, so an incorrect temperature reading will result in an incorrect humidity reading also.
What if my unit will not come on?
First, try changing the battery. If this does not work, remove the battery for up to 4 minutes and then re-insert. This is a way of clearing the unit.
What happens if it freezes up?
This is a sign of a low battery. Remove the battery and replace.
Why does the altitude keep changing?
The altitude is a calculation based on changing air pressure. Changes in the air pressure will cause the altitude to change. Your altitude should be calibrated right before use as an altimeter. See the following link for more information. http://www.thealtimeterstore.com/howtheywork.html
How do I change the units of measure?
With the SkyMaster on, select the mode you wish to change, press and hold the ON/OFF key and, while holding, press the mode key to change units.
What if I get inaccurate readings?
Each reading can be affected by the use. For wind speed, align the impeller with the wind's axis. When taking readings - keep the unit held high. For varying wind directions, you should slowly sweep your arm from side to side to allow the unit to sample wind from various directions. Once you see the highest reading, that is usually where the wind is coming from.
For temperature and humidity, be sure the sensors (just under the impeller) are not near a source of heat (hand, body, sun, etc.). The sensors in this unit are extremely sensitive.
How long does the battery last?
The battery life is varied by the mode the unit is in. Due to the very accurate hygrometer, the humidity measurement will use more battery life. Barometer and wind speed will maximize the life. Average battery life is 6-12 months, depending on use.
Is a PC Interface available?
No.
I bought it a few months ago and never used it. I opened it up the other day and it doesn't work. What do I do?
First replace the battery. If that does not solve the problem, you can contact us, or the company you purchased from. If the unit is within the 1-yr warranty (proof of purchase required for all returns), it can be replaced if deemed defective. If the unit is out of the 1-yr warranty, you can purchase a new unit direct from us at a discounted price.
Why would my dew point be reading off?
Dew point is a calculation of temperature and humidity. If anything is affecting these measurements, the dew point reading will be off.
Does it measure absolute pressure?
The SM-28 can be set to 0 at any location to measure the absolute or station pressure.
Does it measure density altitude?
No.
What if my humidity is reading off 100%?
Recalibrate your humidity by following the instructions in your manual. You will need the voltage input numbers that came with your unit and instructions. They are unique for every instrument. (Please see our manuals page if you have lost your manual)
What if I threw away the instructions and the paper with the humidity calibration numbers on it?
If you have lost your calibration numbers, you can also get the number as they are written down on the unit itself. Call Speedtech to obtain help or to return at 703 430 8055 or email info@speedtech.comHow do I get the impeller to pop up?
Press in on the two buttons on either side of the impeller housing. Do not pull on the impeller housing
How do I get the impeller housing to rotate?
Turn the black impeller and rotate to the closed position when not using.
How do I change the battery?
This can be done on your own with a jewelers screwdriver, or by a jeweler. Remove the six screws on the back of the unit and replace with a fresh battery, type CR-2032. Take care when removing the screws and back so as not to damage or lose any parts.
How long do the batteries last?
Approximately 1 year.
My barometer is reading off. How can I fix this?
This could be that you haven't adjusted your altitude. Remember that the unit is designed to be within 0.06 inHg. Also note that barometric pressure varies greatly from one location to another. This makes it hard to compare to anything - except another barometer in your immediate vicinity. Do not compare it to the local weather report if the source is miles away from you.
How do I activate the backlight?
Press the Set/EL button to activate the backlight.
How do I change the units of measure?
Pressing Units Key at any mode, except Compass and Humidity (WM 200, 300 only), changes the unit to your preferred measurement unit. The Units of measurement sequence is shown below for each model.
When does the instrument switch off?
To turn the unit on or off, press and hold Mode key for about 3 sec. You can turn off the unit at any mode. If the unit is idle for 5 minutes it will auto shut down to preserve battery life.
How do I replace the battery? (All models)
When you see the battery icon on the left side, the battery is low and must be replaced or accuracy is affected. The unit uses a CR2032 Lithium battery. Turn the unit to the back. Use a coin to turn battery cover as indicated by the arrow. Insert the battery with the printed side facing you and close the battery door.
Does the compass need calibrating?
If necessary, to correct for the presence of ferrous metals, the compass can be calibrated. When calibrating the compass make sure to keep your motions smooth and the unit horizontal. Go to compass mode press and hold Set/ EL key till display shows “COMPASS CAL” (blinking). Continue holding Set/EL while turning the unit in a vertical position as shown. Turn the unit around twice, 15 sec per turn, as shown. After completing the 2 turns release Set/ EL key then immediately press again to confirm calibration. If the display shows “END” the calibration is successful. If the display shows “ERR” redo the calibration process.

What ports are listed? Why isn't my port listed?
The Mariner's EDGE has a built-in database of 540 ports in the US. Due to international laws, data cannot be obtained for other countries at this time. Due to the limited space on the internal memory, and for ease of use, the 540 ports were hand-selected to give close readings for any nearby port. Sometimes, you will have to account for the variances, which are usually a few minutes after the primary port's readings. Check the port list to find a port near you.
What type of fish species will my Angler's Edge work for?
All. See page 2 of the manual to read about how it works!

I can't get the compass to work correctly. How do I calibrate it?
The compass needs to be calibrated. In order to do this you need not be around any electrical devices such as in a house, in car that is turned on, near a radio, near electrical transformers, etc. You must also place the unit on a flat surface & make two full clockwise rotations in a relatively slow & controlled manner. The instruction manual is incorrect in stating that these rotations need to occur within 30 sec for each rotation.
How can I turn off the storm alarm, which WILL sound even when the unit is off?

You want to set your parameters for the location of where you will be hunting.
You can also use the future mode if you plan on hunting in a month or so from now, for example.
My unit will not turn on, what do I do?
The first thing to do is take out the batteries. You can replace them with new batteries or use the old batteries. Once you put the batteries back in you should hear a beep. If you do not, hold down the little button between the batteries (the reset button) and then you should hear a beep and the unit should activate.
My display is not reading the wind/water speed or the display is showing a -90 for temperature, what do I do?
Make sure that the long carbon rod is firmly attached to the display. It must be plugged in and completely screwed on and secured to the display to read properly.
How do I change it to read in feet or meters?
For units that have been purchased after 2000, when you open the cap (not the battery end) there will be 4 switches on the opposite side of the circuit board from where the cap snaps in. The 2nd switch from the right (or the 3rd switch from the left) is the unit of measure switch. For Meters, push the switch back (away from you), and for Feet, pull the switch forward (towards you).
What does it mean when it reads dashes?
When there are dashes displayed, the unit is unable to take a reading. The following may cause this to occur:
- the water not being at least 2 ft. deep
- you are trying to take a reading in a pool, bathtub, toilet, or in any other water that is contained
- the frequency may be incorrect for the depth sounder that you are using (remember all depth sounders should be set at 200khz)
- the battery may need to be changed
- there is a defect in the unit, in which case you should immediately contact Speedtech for a RA# to return the unit for testing and evaluation.
How can I use the hand-held version as the external transducer version?
For those units that have been purchase after 2000, all that is required is the purchase of the conversion kit. This includes a transducer at the end of a 12ft cable, and a cap, which the cable snaps in to.
At what end is the transducer?
For the external transducer version, the transducer is located at the end of the 12ft cable.
For the handheld version, the transducer is located in the cap (the end the switch points towards).
Where does the battery go?
The battery goes inside the unit, and is located at the opposite end of the transducer (the end of where the lanyard attaches). Twist off the end and the battery will be visible.
How often do I have to change the battery?
The life of the battery is good for about 500 10-second readings.
If you have been using your depthmate in continuous read mode, this will drain the battery faster. Therefore, you may not get up to 500 readings if you have been using it in the continuous read mode.
How do I change it to continuous read mode?
For units that have been purchased after 2000, when you open the cap (not the battery end) there will be 4 switches on the opposite side of the circuit board from where the cap snaps in. The 1st switch from the right (or the 4th switch from the left) is the continuous read switch. To change to continuous read mode, pull the switch forward (towards you).
